FRAMEWORK

1. What’s the SET-UP? What does the audience need to know to understand the context of this story? Who, what, when, why, where and what did you want? You don’t need to include all of these things, just the most important elements.

2. SEQUENCE OF ACTIONS: What are the chronological plot points? This happened, then this happened.  Then what?  Map out 5-10 key scenes.

3. Next to each of these KEY SCENES – note down who you were feeling at the time. Eg.  I arrived at the airport – I was nervous.

4. Which key scene is your most MEMORABLE MOMENT?Jot down details you remembered.  Use all your senses.

5. The ‘SO WHAT’ (resolution)? What would you say you learned from going through this you didn’t know when the story started? What is the point of this story?

EXAMPLE OF ‘SEQUENCE OF ACTION’

EXAMPLES OF ‘SO WHAT?’

(start at :50secs)

AUDIENCE – the key to unlocking the ‘so what?’

Personal and universal. Not private.

  • What does this moment represent for you and for the audience?
  • What is the shared experience? (have you been in their shoes)
  • What challenges do you share in common with your audience?
  • What are the feelings they are having, that you’ll be having too?
  • What information, knowledge or experience do you have that will help them?

BENEFIT TO THE AUDIENCE – The most powerful speakers have a strong belief that their public speaking will bring some kind of benefit to the audience.

WHAT ENGERY DO YOU TAKE WITH YOU ON STAGE?

  • "normal" voice, pitch typically deep, relaxed
  • Breathing calm and regular
  • Look directly, with a duration appropriate to the social situation - not too long, not too short
  • Flexible, principled, decisive, discerning. But also: breaks with social convention as needed
  • Knows no problems. Can go around any situation. Always knows what to do.
  • bring nothing but peace, even in completely hopeless situations

SAD HIGH STATUS

  • Aggressive, too firm, or stiff
  • Yelling, forced, tight
  • Hold their breath to strengthen a threatening gesture
  • dominant staredown
  • know-it-all attitude, arrogance, stubbornness, incorrigibility
  • Sees problems all the time and everywhere
  • Screams to show superiority
  • Talks over the top of people
  • Ignores those 'beneath' them

BOTTLE YOUR HAPPY HIGH STATUS GET DRUNK ON IT BEFORE YOU GET UP!

  • Give yourself the best chance by physcially being open and communicating non-verbally that you are approachable.
  • Awe, exhilaration and achievement. Those feelings haven’t gone anywhere and you can drop into them at any moment.
  • Confidence is just being comfortable with who you are.
  • This is the feeling you want to take on stage with you and let it carry you throughout.

HOW TO HAVE PRESENCE & GET OVER NERVES

  • Presence is to be ALIVE TO THE MOMENT.  Ready position. What things can you do to be more present?
  • You do not need to be a stereotypical speaker. Why might an introvert be a great speaker?
  • Give yourself the best chance by physcially being open and communicating non-verbally that you are approachable.
